I think I'm ready for Giavotella for one reason: I *haven't* seen him play. I had heard unencouraging things about his defense before, but nothing totally damning his ability to play there until this.

And...that's discouraging. I would say maybe he should be stuck in RF, but it doesn't look like his power projects to a corner OF spot at all, and I'm unsure of his throwing arm.

As a scout, when you're looking at someone you want to see hit for consistent power, (besides the obvious hand/bat speed) you want a guy who does a good job hitting over his back knee. That's a good point of strength and allows a hitter to keep his weight back and help get lift and torque. You also want to see him get his ass all the way through, and his hips presented on contact.

Hosmer does these things brilliantly. His swing is simple, and easy to repeat without wasted motion. All of which helps to explain how he pairs his plus power with impressively low strikeout rates.

I totally understand the rationale for the most part, but I still think it is an extreme overreaction.

For starters, the money is not guaranteed.

Insofar as Zawadzki and Arias are concerned, I could be wrong, but wouldn't they have to pass back through waivers before they could be re-assigned if they were called up? While Arias is completely expendable, I think they may have been fortunate to sneak Zawadzki back through waivers the first time.

There is also the point that this past season was the only one since 2003 in which Feliz has been worth somewhere around 2.0 WAR. His career UZR/150 is 14.9 at third. Obviously, this is a huge 'if' given his age, but if he can return to form defensively and is actually needed, we've got a capable guy that preserves a year of arbitration eligibility in Moustakas.

Unlike in the cases of Jose Guillen or Yuniesky Betancourt or even Jeff Francoeur, the Feliz deal does not mean as much, largely because his money is not guaranteed. The defensive ceiling for '11 is also a lot higher with him, and it could conceivably make up for other deficiencies should it come to the unlikely circumstance that he plays.

More than likely, this is all moot. It is probably just an unofficial spring training invite that won't amount to anything.

I think the negativity regarding this signing is aimed at the evaluation process that led to deciding Pedro Feliz has any kind of value, even if it is just as insurance against injury. The reality is that he can't possibly provide enough defense to make up for his offensive shortcomings. More to the point, GMDM has become so laughably predictable at picking up these type of "worst option possible" players that he should avoid signing anyone who even slightly resembles a low OBP player. I think most of the comments that I have seen are taking this as further evidence that GMDM and his staff don't properly evaluate/value major league talent. Let's face it, if we have the same injury problems at 3B this year as we did last year, bringing up Zawadki(sp?), Arias or Falu would be a much better option than playing (and paying) Feliz.

I don't think Moore will jettison Kila too quickly. First, Moore's genetic code stipulates log jams at 1B and its just not jammed up enough yet. Second, if Gordon can't get going and Kila can eek out a 350+ OBP, Hoz may be headed for the outfield with Myers as Gordon exits the building. The odd man out is definitely Clint Robinson.

@ Kyle - The lack of depth in the rotation and viable spot starters from the current roster construction is really going to be a problem, especially as the bullpen begins to become taxed from having to provide 4+ innings of work five nights a week.

The other issue that will likely arise (that I intend to address at some point this offseason) is that DeJesus's production offensively is not likely to be replaced from this lot of players, which is problematic. They already had issues scoring runs because no one in a Royals uniform can draw a walk by law, but so far the pieces that are looking to be vying for playing time this year don't have a lot of offensive upside, at least in the short term.

I don't see the 2011 season as being any worse than 2010. The defense is exponentially better, and the offense can't get much worse. The bullpen is going to be WAY better. The rotation is the one spot that is going to be worse. Losing Greinke and Chen (the #1 and #2 starters), is going to hurt. But I still haven't lost faith in Hochevar or Davies and SOS and Mazarro will be good adders. Hoch and Mazarro will be helped alot by this improved defense.

I drank too much blue kool-aid over the christmas season.
